If you’re staying in the Ilfracombe area, you’re perfectly placed to explore some of North Devon’s most scenic coastal trails, riverside paths and gentle countryside routes.

Here are ten of the best walks to enjoy during your stay – all within 40 minutes from North Devon Resort in Ilfracombe.

Ilfracombe to Hele Bay

Distance from North Devon Resort: 0–1 mile
Walk distance: Approx. 2 miles return

This coastal walk begins virtually on your doorstep and follows a short but rewarding stretch of the South West Coast Path. As you leave Ilfracombe, the trail rises along the cliffs before opening up to wide sea views across the Bristol Channel.

There are some steps and gradients along the way, making it best suited to confident walkers and families with older children. The reward comes at Hele Bay, where a small café and sheltered beach offer a welcome pause before heading back.

Heddon Valley Riverside Walk

Distance from North Devon Resort: Approx. 12 miles
Walk distance: Approx. 2 miles return

Tucked away in Exmoor National Park, Heddon Valley offers one of the gentlest countryside walks in the area. The mostly flat riverside path follows the River Heddon through ancient woodland, creating a peaceful and shaded route that feels far removed from busy coastal paths.

It’s particularly popular with guests seeking a slower pace, and the Hunter’s Inn at the end of the walk provides a cosy stop for lunch or a drink before retracing your steps.

Lee Bay Circular

Distance from North Devon Resort: Approx. 5 miles
Walk distance: 1.5–2 miles circular

Starting in the quiet village of Lee, this circular route blends woodland paths with glimpses of the sea and a small sheltered bay. It’s short enough to suit families with younger children, yet varied enough to feel like a proper countryside adventure.

The village pub makes it easy to extend the outing with refreshments at the end.
